4 Worlds: Coping With Technology Complexity
نویسنده
چکیده
Contemporary being is characterized by complexity -increasing differentiation, multiplying relationships between parts, and decline from deterministic behavior (Gill, 2013; Kirshbaum, 2002; Lucas, 2007; Raymond et al., 1997; Weick, 1990). Technology is part of complexity. Complexity is manifest in the problem to be solved by technology, in the intellectual solution to the problem, in technology design and its workings, and in the technology user’s cognition (Fig. 1). This study introduces the MIPS model for studying technology complexity. It draws on Karl Popper's (1978) Three World ontology extended with the fourth aspect Social World. Technology is conceived in a multifaceted manner and from perspectives of different actors. The MIPS model was applied to the case of social media. It is found that MIPS contributed to broadening horizons of theorizing technology. Bob Travica Hickson Research Day, Asper School of Business, April, 2015 METHODOLOGY • Research problem: How can we comprehend complexity in technology? • Philosophical, epistemological study • Popper’s (1978) Three World-ontology extended with Social World • McLuhan’s (1960, 1962, 1964) ideas: global electronic brain, medium is a message, global tribalism, role of visual imagery in community creation • Case of social media • Research questions (MIPS model, Fig. 2): • Material: What functionality and physical shape does technology present to the actor? • Intellectual: What intellectual content embedded in technology does stand out for the actor? • Personal: How does an actor personally experience technology? • Social: What is/should technology be with regard to the social parties affecting the actor? Technical Problems Experienced in the Transformation of Virtual Worlds into an Education Environment and Coping Strategies
Research into virtual worlds demonstrates that to successfully use virtual world platforms in different disciplines, certain limitations and potential difficulties of these platforms must be overcome. The current study extends previous research by investigating problems in integrating virtual worlds in education with a longitudinal observation of two cases and in perspectives of designers, prac...
متن کاملAssessing the Possibility of Biological Complexity on Other Worlds, with an Estimate of the Occurrence of Complex Life in the Milky Way Galaxy
Rational speculation about biological evolution on other worlds is one of the outstanding challenges in astrobiology. With the growing confirmation that multiplanetary systems abound in the universe, the prospect that life occurs redundantly throughout the cosmos is gaining widespread support. Given the enormous number of possible abodes for life likely to be discovered on an ongoing basis, the...
متن کاملMicro-worlds and the circular relation between people and their environment
In experiments with micro-worlds, subjects are required to interact with a computer simulation of a complex dynamic system for some period of time, bringing the simulation to some specified state and keeping it there. There are now a number of such simulations available. They allow one to bridge the gap between the laboratory and the field and make it possible to study the circular relation bet...
متن کاملTrust in computer technology and the implications for design and evaluation
Computer technology is pervasive and often problematic, and the sociological construct of trust has emerged as an important intervening variable to describe reliance on technology. Trust is an important mechanism for coping with the cognitive complexity that accompanies increasingly sophisticated technology. Because of this, understanding trust can help explain reliance on technology and human ...
متن کاملBiclique Cryptanalysis of Block Ciphers LBlock and TWINE-80 with Practical Data Complexity
In the biclique attack, a shorter biclique usually results in less data complexity, but at the expense of more computational complexity. The early abort technique can be used in partial matching part of the biclique attack in order to slightly reduce the computations. In this paper, we make use of this technique, but instead of slight improvement in the computational complexity, we keep the amo...
